Dry Eye Treatment

Dry Eye Treatment

Dry Eye can have an impact on how you see. You may find your eyes getting tired more quickly or even have difficulty with the quality of your vision. Here’s a look at some dry eye treatments.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when a person doesn’t have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish their eyes. Tears reduce eye infections, remove foreign debris and keep the front surface of the eyes smooth and clear. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears on their own or they are poor quality. It’s a common and often chronic condition.

Preventive Self Care

If you think you have dry eyes, here are a few simple self care options that might manage minor cases.

Blink regularly when reading or staring at a computer screen for long periods of time.

When possible, be sure you have adequate humidity in the air at work or home.

Wear sunglasses outside to reduce sun and wind exposure.

Under supervision of your PCP, you may take supplements with essential fatty acids as they may decrease dry eye symptoms.

Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day to stay hydrated.

Dry eye could be a side effect of some medications.

Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.

Artificial Tears

For mild cases of dry eyes, the first option is to try over the counter eye drops. Here are a few tips for choosing the right one:

Low viscosity - These artificial tears are watery. They often provide quick relief with little or no blurring of your vision, but you’ll need to use these drops frequently to obtain adequate relief.

High viscosity - These over the counter tears are more gel-like and provide longer lasting lubrication. They are often recommended for use at bedtime.

Prescription Dry Eye Treatments

There are several prescriptions that treat dry eye differently. Dr. Barnes will evaluate your eyes and recommend the best course of action if a prescription is required.

These range from antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, tear stimulating medications to punctal plugs.

Dry eye treatment may require a few courses of action to correct and maintain, but there is hope and we’ll make every effort to find the right solution that meets the needs of your lifestyle. Our goal is to make you comfortable and to see your best!
